33 seasons in cricket management did little to prepare Bakes for the events of last week. A lacklustre start to the season combined with financial difficulties led to the sale of Whamo’s first team with the exception of Indika. Having sanctioned the sales Baker admitted doubts crossed his mind as to whether he was doing the right thing.
“Considering life without our leading run scorer (Hooper, 35,321 runs) and wicket taker (Duck, 997 wickets) was so emotional. They have each been with the club since they were 17 and have grown into great cricketers and better men.
“But for the club to grow and reach its true potential I knew I had to say goodbye.
“Indi is the future, we will build a team around him and hopefully start to challenge again next season and reward the fans for their patience and loyalty.”
